Senior Backend Engineer
San Francisco, CA (Hybrid)$180K - $240K + Equity
About this Role
We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build the core infrastructure that powers Stage's gateway platform. You'll work on distributed systems, real-time data processing, and API design that serves millions of requests per day.
As one of our early engineers, you'll have significant influence over our technical direction and architecture. You'll work closely with our CTO and founding team to make key technical decisions that will shape the future of our platform.
What You'll Do
- Design and implement core gateway services that process millions of API requests
- Build scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems
- Own the full lifecycle of features from design to deployment
- Collaborate with product and design to shape the developer experience
- Mentor junior engineers and establish engineering best practices
- Participate in on-call rotation and incident response
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of backend development experience
- Strong proficiency in Node.js/TypeScript or Go
- Experience building and operating distributed systems at scale
- Deep understanding of HTTP, REST APIs, and networking fundamentals
- Experience with databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis)
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
Nice to Have
- Experience building developer tools or API infrastructure
- Contributions to open source projects
- Experience at a high-growth startup
- Knowledge of GraphQL, gRPC, or WebSockets
- Experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration
